Windows 7: End Of The Line

(more info)
If you have not heard by now, Microsoft has ended extended support for Windows 7 as of January 14, 2020.

What does this mean?

This means that Windows 7 is now considered to be abandonware. Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates for Windows 7 to keep your PC secure from exploits, and other types of malware. Other software companies will eventually do the same thing as well in a few years or so after Microsoft's extended support date, and end their support of releasing new versions of their software for Windows 7.

Microsoft strongly recommends that the consumer upgrades to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 to continue receiving security updates.

For users who are using either Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Enterprise on Volume License Keys can choose to continue receiving Windows 7 updates, but at a yearly adding cost set by Microsoft though until 2023. If you think Windows 10 sucks, come on over to Linux Mint. I did that windows 7 support ended, and have been windows free since then and I do not miss it one little bit. My wife's laptop runs Windows 10, and whenever I have to get on it for any reason, I cringe at the sluggish way Windows Operates. If you shoot and edit Videos, Ubuntu Studio, which is 1 of the 3 operating Systems on My desktop Computer uses and it has everything you Video and Photo work. Two of the Programs it comes with Kdenlive and Blender, these two Programs are what made the Franchise Transformers Movies. The Software Managers for both these Operating systems, have over 38,000 free programs you can download.

@Palladini Linux is great, and is getting better with Proton to run Windows games. Exciting times!

One very polished Linux distro I like is Zorin, have you used that one?

Windows 7 was really great. I wish Windows still looked like it. It combined a more modern look with that old Windows XP sensibility. It will be missed.

@spiderfan Use a browser based on Firefox, those have exceptionally good track records supporting Windows versions far beyond their EoL date. Don't rely on any Electron apps, those will be first to go as they're attached to Google. Carefully pick your motherboard and GPU for new machines, ensuring compatibility. ALso see this lol https://www.ghacks.net/2019/12/07/someone-found-a-way-to-bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-checks/

tldr this OS will be practical well into the 2020s. playing modern AAA games will probably require a dualboot though *sighs*
